Christmas Santa

28 Years of Toltech Digital – Scotland’s Longest Running Web Development Company (as far as we know!)

This week marks 28 years since we first opened our doors at Toltech Digital. That’s right — July 1st, 1997.

Back then, websites were built in raw HTML, dial-up tones were the soundtrack to our lives, and Google didn’t even exist. People asked Jeeves, surfed on AltaVista and Netscape, and tried to squeeze design magic out of early versions of Aldus Photoshop before Adobe snapped it up.

The world of the web has constantly changed and we’ve lived through:

  • The clunky symphony of 28k dial-up modems
  • The jump to broadband (a revolution in itself)
  • The dawn of Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, and Excite
  • Table-based layouts, Flash intros, and hit counters
  • The shift from static HTML to dynamic CMSs
  • The rise (and fall) of pop-ups, banner ads and keyword stuffing
  • The birth of mobile-first design
  • And now, the seismic shift brought on by AI

In that time, we’ve seen coding languages come and go — from HTML and CSS to PHP, ASP, JavaScript, and frameworks that promised the world (and some delivered).

We’ve also navigated:

  • The chaos of early spam filters
  • Forgotten passwords (we’ve all been there)
  • Hosting nightmares
  • The rise of security threats
  • And the ever-expanding list of software subscriptions, turning once-simple tools into monthly overheads

Yet here we are — 28 years on, still growing, still adapting, and still helping Scottish businesses be more visible online.

Along the Way — A Few New Looks

Over the last 28 years, we’ve evolved not just in what we do but in how we present ourselves. We’ve rebranded four times, each change reflecting the growth of our team, the shifts in technology, and the maturing of our clients’ needs. You can see that journey in the logos we’ve included with this post — a quiet nod to the eras we’ve worked through and the future we’re building toward.

From those first brochure websites to today’s smart, integrated platforms, we’ve remained committed to building websites that not only look great but do the job. And now, with AI, smarter tools, and sharper strategy, we’re helping our clients go even further.

If we’ve worked with you, thank you. If we haven’t, we’d love to.

Here’s to the next chapter — with less noise, more clarity, and websites that work harder than ever.

Toltech Digital. Since 1997. Still here. Still innovating.
