Guide to Preparing Images for Websites

Sending Images to Toltech

When sending images to Toltech use the following guide:

• Higher resolution images are generally better for us. We can always reduce them but we can’t make small images bigger and maintain the quality
• More is better. If you have any doubt send us more images. We may not use them all but we can often use sections of photos for design elements
• If you are sending multiple photos and the total is over 12-15 MB please use an online web services (eg We Transfer, or Send Big File – which are free). These services are specifically built to send large files but not through ‘regular email’
• If you have a photo with the wrong content eg a background or wrong person, select another photo. No we can’t just  work magic and ‘photoshop it out’
• Make sure you own the photo or have the express permission to use it from the rights holder. We cannot be held responsible for copyright infringement if you use any assets without permission of the right holder.

Processing Your Own Images for Websites/Digital Marketing etc

Software

If you want to process images, you need proper photo editing software to edit photos. We suggest that you Do not use the Microsoft native software (eg Windows Live Photo gallery) which comes with Windows: it does not have the required functionality.

Technical Specifications

If you are preparing images for a website or digital marketing directly you should use the following. If you are in any doubt please ask us for guidance. Resolution: 72 dpi Format:  jpg, webp or png  – but be careful as they all have nuances

Picture Dimensions (pixels)

When preparing images for the web all sizes are measured in pixels. Images must be prepared to the correct size to display on the page/placeholder. Do not upload images that have not been processed properly. It is really important that you upload photos with the correct dimensions: check the size of the placeholder and make sure your image is the correct size

File Sizes

Try to minimise the file size as much as possible. Lower file sizes means faster loading websites A typical picture (jpg) at 600 px should be no more than 50Kb in file size

File Name

Name your file something intuitive and unique relevant to and descriptive of the photo content. Use underscores (_) to separate words Example of good naming: worcester_boiler_model_greenstar_800.jpg Example of bad naming: DCF111128-2323.jpg
